Thank you for visiting my website. My practice is currently full and I'm not able to take new clients at this time. Please consider reaching out to my colleagues Kelly Merdinger and Jaya Ramesh, both of whom have current availability.
Hello! I am a licensed clinical psychologist who has been in private practice since 2001. I provide individual, couples/relationship, and group therapy, supervision, and consultation. I am also the founder of The Living Room, a collective of independent practitioners dedicated to healing and liberation that has been in emergence since 2016. Please continue reading to learn more about my practice and background.
Psychotherapy Modalities
Therapy is not one size fits all, so my approach is creative, emergent and integrative. Together we will find the path that is right for you. Most foundational for me are feminist, multicultural, relational, and somatic approaches, all embedded in an anti-oppressive analysis. I have specialized training in empirically validated treatments for mood and anxiety disorders, PTSD, and relationship distress, but these are just some of the tools I use. An integrative approach also means that I balance gaining insights from the past with learning new skills and making behavior changes in the present.
Many people come to therapy having experienced trauma of various kinds, I utilize a body-based treatment modality called Somatic Experiencing - a gentle approach to healing trauma that helps to restore our bodies' natural ability to self-regulate, transforming trauma responses such as flight/flight/freeze/appease into renewed trust, groundedness and social engagement. While not a hands-on approach, Somatic Experiencing guides you in listening to the wealth of information stored in your body about past traumas, current resources, strengths and resilience. Somatic Experiencing is also a powerful tool to explore the impacts of trauma resulting from systemic oppression (racism, classism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc.) while simultaneously supporting our work to change the oppressive systems we are a part of. As with any of our work together, we will engage in internal, somatic healing and external, social change work to the degree that you wish - this is up to you.
My strong commitment to integrating a social justice and anti-oppression focus into psychotherapy means that, when relevant, we will explore the impacts that racism, sexism, classism, able-ism, homophobia, transphobia, and other experiences of oppression based on social group membership you may have had in your life, as well as how social group memberships have provided strength, community and resilience. We may also explore areas of privilege and oppression as they occur in and impact our therapeutic relationship.
My style is interactive, meaning that I will listen, respond, ask questions, and suggest new skills and coping strategies. Often I will utilize between-session homework assignments and suggest relevant readings, so that your learning and growth can continue between our in-person therapy appointments.
Background
I earned my doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Washington in 1999, and completed my pre-doctoral internship at the Seattle VA Medical Center. I continued to work at the VA for four years, as a staff member on the inpatient Posttraumatic Stress Disorder treatment program, prior to beginning private practice. I joined Associates in Behavioral Health in 2001 and was a Partner there from 2002-2016. In 2016 I left ABH to found The Living Room.
In addition to private practice, I am a Clinical Instructor at the University of Washington, providing supervision to psychology graduate students. I write and give talks on topics including couples therapy, gender roles and depression, working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer and transgender clients, integrating psychology with social justice activism and advocacy, and managing a private practice. Along with Christopher Martell, Ph.D. and Stephen Safren, Ph.D. I co-authored Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies with Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Clients which in 2004 won the Distinguished Book Award from the American Psychological Association - Division 44 (Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues).
I have been involved with political activism and advocacy at the state and federal levels for many years. I am passionate about integrating a strong social justice and anti-oppression analysis with traditional psychology. To that end in 2008 I co-founded an organization called Therapeutic Justice Project (www.therapeuticjustice.blogspot.com ), a multidisciplinary group of mental health professionals, advocates, and healers dedicated to integrating social justice and anti-oppression awareness into our professional practices. In 2010 I founded Beyond the Bridge (www.beyond-the-bridge.org), a community organization whose goal was to reduce LGBTQ youth suicide by focusing on the primary risk factors including bullying, family rejection, homelessness, messages of intolerance from faith communities, homophobia and transphobia. In addition to community education we awarded grants to local organizations whose work was focused on these areas.
I have been working with trans, non binary and gender expansive clients and couples for 22 years, including both transition support and non-transition related psychotherapy. In 2012 in collaboration with a colleague we formed the Therapists and Physicians consult group for providers working with transgender clients, in partnership with the Ingersoll Gender Center. This group now provides both on line and in person peer consultation for over 600 practitioners.
