Saturday, November 3rd, 2018 10 am to 1 pm $40
This presentation will introduce Liberation Psychology (LP) first proposed by Ignacio Martin-Baro during his time as a Jesuit, social psychologist, and activist. We will consider LP's emergence and transfer beyond Latin America, and how LP has informed transformative practices in and beyond the clinical setting. We will explore the relevance of psychologies from the "margins" of American psychology as we interrogate our roles as practitioners, advocates and activists.
The presentation will:
1) Introduce Ignacio Martin-Baro's work and concepts.
2) Discuss the transfer of Liberation Psychology to the United States focusing on the organizations and advocacy work involved.
3) Explore the narratives of psychologists using a Liberation Psychology framework in practice and research.
4) Discuss critical psychologies enhancement of our practices and understanding of therapeutic change.
Participants will be encouraged to engage with the material actively throughout the presentation. Dialogue is key!
